Good morning organizers of the “Barden Me- Revisiting Shakespeare” conference. Thank you for inviting me to discuss my perspective on the relevance of William Shakespeare's works in contemporary society. In my academic opinion, I believe that Shakespeare's literary works are actually still significant and important in modern society. In particular, one of his most famous works, “Macbeth”, undeniably demonstrates how Shakespeare's works are still relevant for today's youth. Through the manipulation of the representations, themes, relationships, and events depicted throughout “Macbeth,” it becomes apparent that the values, attitudes, and beliefs that underpin the play relate directly to our contemporary world. Undoubtedly, Macbeth demonstrates that during the time of Macbeth and Lady Macbeth In debates over what course of action to take, it becomes evident that two rationalizing strategies of persuasion emerge. The reasoning: to rationalize, contemplate and recognize as opposed to desire-driven passion is clearly evident when Macbeth states: "Duncan has borne his faculties so mildly, has been so clear in his great office, that his virtues will plead like angels ". Macbeth cannot find a legitimate reason to kill his King, rather he considers him a good king. So instead, he is driven by a passion established in him by Lady Macbeth and the prophecy of three witches. Likewise, throughout society we see this same passion lacking in reasoning. From Adolf Hitler, who led mass genocides, Osama Bin Laden, the face of terrorism, Vlad the third prince of Valacia, a vengeful patriot torturer, Idi Amin, an ethnic cleanser, Elizabeth Bathory, a bathing child killer of blood, up to contemporary groups of society. like ISIS. These are all examples of people driven by impulsive passion. This is relevant to young people in society because in some way shape or form they are affected by the actions of these people. Whether this happens directly through family victims, perhaps in the Second World War, or indirectly through the media that exposes them to the reality of terrorist groups such as ISIS.
