I will talk about many of them below and give you a new perspective on how corrupt speed cameras and the people behind them are. Speed cameras are computerized machines, as some of us will know. This means there is no surefire way to know if the camera is issuing tickets correctly. It may have fallen out of calibration leaving innocent motorists with a fine they don't deserve. The lack of human oversight means that no one person will be held accountable for widespread errors or misconduct by officials. Because tickets are received weeks later, defendants have very limited ability to gather evidence in their defense. This is especially true for mobile cameras that may no longer be in the same location or work zone cameras where the location may have been substantially changed by the time the defendant becomes aware of the alleged crime. Tickets are issued to the owner of the vehicle even if he is not the driver. A third of speed camera fines go to people who didn't actually commit the crime because someone else was driving at the time. This is even more concerning now that Maryland courts have declared paying a fine to be an “admission of speeding.” Recipients of tickets contesting citations are heard in an unfair court proceeding commonly known as District Court "Speed Camera Day," where dozens of defendants are heard as if in an assembly line.
