Literary Analysis Sue Monk Kidd's first novel, The Secret Life of Bees, was a literary success. Even though Sue didn't just become successful due to sudden luck. In The Secret Life of Bees, Sue brought together many elements to complete her novel. Some elements include Sue's input of Southern Style Language, aspects of protagonist Lily's voice, and the inclusion of imagery. One crucial contributing factor is Sue's writing style. In The Secret Life of Bees Sue not only sets the novel in South Carolina during the time of desegregation, but she also incorporates the Southern voice into her writing. Sue does this by including terms like "Yankee" and "boy" to give the reader a sense of everyday Southern life. For example: “…I thought about that cop, Eddie Hazelwurst, saying that I stooped to be in this black women's house, and for the rest of my life I couldn't understand how it got that way , how black women had become lowest on the totem pole. You only had to look at them to see how special they were, like royalty hidden among us. Eddie Hazelwurst. How disgusting” (Kidd 147). This quote shows the southern voice that Sue puts into each of her characters. Another element included in Secret Life of Bees is Sue's input on the voice of the main character Lily. Lily's narration ranges from humorous to dramatic language. The versatility of Lily's voice is amazing; Sue covers a lot of ground and adds additional elements to her tone. Additionally, Sue often refers to Lily's emotional language, highlighting its power and emotional aspect to speak to the reader through the text. An example of Lily's funny/adorable voice is: "She bowed her face... middle of the paper... acting even more. For example: "I watched their wings glow like pieces of chrome in the dark and I felt the longing in my chest. The way those bees flew, not even looking for a flower, just flying for the feel of the wind, it broke my heart" (Kidd 1). This quote is a perfect example of imagery used in The Secret Life of Bees because you can imagine how the character feels and what he sees. It is described so vividly that it is as if the readers can hear the bees buzzing in their ears. Ultimately these three elements contributed greatly to the creation of The Secret Life of Bees Without they Sue Monk Kidd perhaps would not have created the novel as exceptionally Sue Monk Kidd brought together the Southern style language, aspects of the protagonist Lily's voice, and the inclusion of imagery to create the stunningly written novel, The Secret Life of Bees...
