Topic > Essay on the Feminist Model - 1278

Assignment 2For the purposes of this assignment, I have chosen to focus on the feminist model for ethical decision making. Corey, Corey, and Callanan (2011) define the feminist model as “involving clients at every stage of the process, a strategy based on the feminist principle that power should be equal in the therapeutic relationship” (p. 20). I believe the feminist model is the most effective model in addressing a wide variety of ethical dilemmas because it involves the client in constructing a possible solution, giving them a certain level of autonomy regarding their future. Through the feminist model, a counselor reduces the imposition of their values on students while validating the ethical dilemma the student is experiencing. Aspects of the social constructionist model are also applicable to the feminist model in addressing ethical dilemmas and creating ethical interaction in decision making. The positive qualities of the social constructionist model focus the decision in the social context itself, not in the mind of the person making the decision (Corey et al. 2011, p. 21). Although the feminist model focuses on the mind of the person making the decision, I would incorporate social context into conversations that revolve around ethical dilemmas in higher education. The social constructionist model includes approaches to use when challenging students that include: “negotiation, consensualization, and whenAs Corey et al. (2011) asserts nonmaleficence as “counselors avoid doing harm, which includes refraining from actions that risk hurting clients…professionals must develop cultural awareness and sensitivity when evaluating their clients.” (20) Being culturally aware and sensitive when evaluating clients helps counselors reveal personal values that may be harmful to the client.
