Topic > George Orwell: The fight against totalitarianism

Winston Smith, the protagonist of 1984 and one of the last free men in Oceania, wants nothing more than to remember the history before Big Brother. Big Brother tries to control the public and how they see the truth with numerous surveillance techniques. Big Brother maximized the control the political ruling class had over the residents of Airstrip One by using the creation of Newspeak, a variety of propaganda, and the constant surveillance of citizens through the use of telescreens and thought police. Many believe that Orwell invented the political ideas surrounding his book Nineteen Eighty-Four. It was written in a time when politics were influenced by the First World War and the following decade. In The Road to Wigan Pier, Orwell wrote: "The horrors of the Russian Revolution were still fresh in everyone's minds." I don't think Orwell was necessarily giving us a detailed picture of what the future will be like or how political communication will be conducted. In his 2004 biography of George Orwell, DJ Taylor observed that “the appeal – and resonance – of 1984 for many of its original readers came from the fact that it depicted a world with which, by and large, they already knew. " This quote reinforces my idea that Orwell did not prophesy the future, but it forces us to think about how our past actions control our future. O'Brien's statement "He who controls the past controls the future. Whoever controls the present controls the past." Orwell is recounting what he and many others experienced as teenagers experiencing the horrors of the First World War. In my mind this only reinforces the idea that 1984 was written around the structure of Russian Revolution fueling Orwell's predictions... middle of the paper... every step we take is on a tape somewhere. Same goes for smartphones, with new tracking technology and apps like “Find My Friends ” or Facebook's Check-in feature, everything we do is tracked. The only thing left for us to do is trust that the government won't misuse our information if Orwell was right about the surveillance part. he was definitely wrong about big brothers ability to control us. Yes, the mass media may have some sort of control over us, most people don't tune in to the shows that allow them to frame and trigger the information we are fed. . We can turn to other sources of information to find the truth instead of having only one reliable source “The Trinity of Truth” as they did in 1984. Now resistance can be easily organized and people can join together through social media or forums like Reddit.
