My group and I decided to shoot a scene from the movie Mean Girls. I know what you're thinking, a bunch of white girls doing a predictable Mean Girls scene. But listen to me. We chose to do a scene from this film for two reasons. The first was that we had a group of five girls and none of us wanted to play a male role. The second pattern will suit your tastes a little more. This movie is very predictable, you're just there, but there's so much in this movie that you can dig deeper and find real meaning to a group of high school girls showing their dominance in the hallways by bullying the others. We decided to shoot the Halloween scene. The scene begins with background music coming from the party as Cady approaches the house. We hear Regina and Aaron talking and when they start talking about Cady the music gets softer so we hear their words more clearly. As the camera pans to Cady greeting Regina and Aaron in the doorway, the music gets louder and louder. Cady wears a really creepy costume with blood and face paint all over her body, while everyone around her is wearing skimpy bunny costumes, including Regina. The shot returns to Aaron and Regina. Aaron seems scared and afraid of Cady because Regina just spread the rumor that Cady had already fallen madly in love with him. The music gets louder and speeds up, which foreshadows the chaos that is about to occur. (The song playing at this moment is Operate, by Peaches.) The camera pans back to Cady and her voiceover begins speaking to the audience as she tells us she couldn't believe anyone could actually hate Regina. Then, a twist! Cady's next line is, "Regina is such a good...(GASP)...BITCH!" when... middle of the paper... ovie does a great job of illustrating sexual and social norms. I hope to learn how hard it is to make just one short scene because I don't think he really realizes how hard it will be. When I hear that it took a whole year to make a film I don't really understand why. I also hope to learn to connect with my character in the film, which might bring out more ideas about what the writer is trying to accomplish. Maybe I'll learn that society controls how I dress at all these college themed parties and I'll stop dressing so provocatively towards them because I know I don't need it but it's considered "normal." And finally, I hope to find some love and appreciation for theatre. I am taking this course as a GE, but I feel that GEs are meant to open your horizons and make you experience and understand new things. I'm excited!
