What you find in the world of politics is a world of fear. Or at least so for those who cross paths with Francis Underwood, the main character of the Netflix original series, House of Cards. At the beginning of the first season, Francis Underwood captures the true essence of what the entire show is about: “There are two kinds of pain. The kind of pain that makes you strong, or useless pain. The kind of pain that is just suffering. I have no patience for useless things” (Script: reddit.com). As he finishes this sentence he brutally kills a dog lying on the street, which had just been injured after being hit by a car. He continues: “Moments like this require someone like me. Someone who will take action. Who will do what no one else has the courage to do. The unpleasant thing. The necessary thing” (Script: reddit.com). Through persuasion, manipulation and corrupt politics, House of Cards shows a unique view of the world in Washington, which some may believe is not far from the truth. In the opening scene the writers of this screenplay first want to capture your attention and make you want to like their main character. Giving you an idea of the type of person Francis Underwood is, along with many other tactics used, this scene gives a complete picture of what is yet to come. By strategically distracting the other characters, he allows Francis to silently put the dog out of his suffering. Francis has a persuasive mindset, and he displays it here by falsely giving the dog's owners hope and convincing them to come in while he "investigates" (Script: reddit.com). As episode one of season one continues, we see in the next scene a beautiful dress dazzling in the light from above. As the camera pans back we see that it is Francis' wife, Claire. Halfway through... middle of the paper... the structure gives this series a solid backbone to work from. Working to create an atmosphere dedicated to corrupting people in Washington, "House of Cards" is the epitome of how power and greed can bring out the worst in people. By strategically showing us Washington from a new point of view, your eyes will be opened to the raw possibilities of human nature. Works Cited House of Cards. Dir.
