Humans can destroy, maim, or devastate caves. Humans indirectly affect the cave by touching the walls, which results in discoloration and prevents the growth of the cave formation. Humans tend to litter, which is not allowed. The caves are locked during off hours so that no one can vandalize the caves. Efforts to return the caves to the state they were in before human impact include closing the artificial entrances with doors to restore humidity. The Payson Outdoor Club was founded in 1921. The club is dedicated to protecting and preserving caves from vandalism. These efforts, along with laws, will help prevent further human impacts on the planet
