The Klan seemed to want to rule over blacks and control them through ways of fear and violent attacks on their community, this was always present in the south and Elias Hill makes his one night record he was terrified. Klan members targeted black men who were highly regarded in the black community, Elias Hill was not only a Baptist preacher, but also a community intellectual, a teacher for black children, and a business broker in his neighborhood. Hill was a noble man in his community, but he was also a crippled man and I think that made him the perfect target. He was immobile, because his arms and legs were paralyzed and withered, he could not walk or take care of himself, and this made him the perfect target for the Klan's assault.
