Sexism has been extremely widespread in the world since the birth of agricultural societies. As groups of people transitioned from hunting and gathering practices to agriculture, women were no longer needed to keep the group alive. Their role in society was degraded to that of bearing children and therefore they were considered suitable only for domestic work and were not included in forced labor. This was the beginning of a deeply rooted sexism that continues to this day. We have seen many examples of this throughout history, from high levels of abuse in ancient Rome, to European witch hunts that viciously attack women and lead to an estimated 51,000 deaths, to extreme levels of sexism surrounding the modern military and even to this day. We see recurring patterns of unfair accusations against women, physical abuse and even murder. There are many ways we have improved the treatment of women throughout history, but there are also many ways we can still improve. Violence against women has been an important social construct for thousands of years and was an important part of ancient Rome. society. There are many examples of extreme violence against women in this period, from the murder of Regilla to the Consualia. A famous example of physical abuse during this time period was the murder of Regilla. Regilla was the wife of the noble Herod and was eventually killed due to domestic abuse. Herod had sent his freedman, Alcimedon, to punish her and the abuse ultimately led to her death. She was eight months pregnant at the time. Although Regilla's family filed charges against Herod and Alcimedon, they escaped the trials unscathed due to Herod's close relationship with the Emperor. The assassination of Regil......center of the card......n in modern times as well as in history. There are many such cases around the world, from high levels of sexual violence in Congo with no punishment for rapists, to sexual torture in South America, with 2,800-3,000 women killed every year in the United States, and 78% of sexual crimes within families targeting girls. As Lori E. Amy says, “We ignore the madness of a social order in which the sexual danger we warn them [girls] about is considered normal” (Inherit 153). This modern sexism comes from years of sexism made acceptable by society. We have seen examples of this in history, but it is still applied in modern times. Advertisements featuring men beating their wives were common in the mid-1900s and laws recognizing marital rape as a bad thing were only passed in 1978. The place of women has been low throughout history and from this we see that it is still a problem today..
