Topic > Geisha Romance - 2965

Asia and Asian peoples have typically been portrayed by Western culture to fit certain perceptions. Stereotypes and preordained ideas about Geisha have been created for many reasons. These reasons are the misrepresentation of Hollywood and films, a culturally Western male language based on gender as the dominant language, a lack of cultural-aesthetic appreciation and understanding on the part of foreign males who have encountered geisha, and finally the confusion between the geisha and prostitute districts and what it looks like as a real geisha. Orientalism, which is a Western style of dominating, restructuring and having authority over the East, placing limits on it and calling it “the Other” (Said, 3, 1979), has influenced the creation and strengthening of the subjugated, exotic and decadent geisha. Unfortunately these romantic images continue to persist and are used to provide false interpretations of the geisha. Geisha are defined as artistic people who study classical Japanese music and dance, perform music and dance for parties, and are officially registered with a central office. (Foreman, 34, 2005, Prasso, 200, 2006) Combined expertise in music and dance with a sense of elegance, tact and grace that wins the respect and admiration of clients. (Groemer, 159, 2009). They were high-class performers and common people could not afford them as entertainers. They are expected to be witty, flattering, excellent conversationalists, and must endure long years of rigorous training in traditional dance or playing the shamisen, a three-stringed instrument (Struck, 2000). Only those who were very wealthy could pay for the accompaniment of a Geisha. Overall, Geisha should be interpreted as performers, just like in the West, I have...... middle of paper ...... “geisha” attitude that cannot be pinpointed to a certain set of characteristics and attributes . For these reasons, geisha have been romanticized and misrepresented. Therefore, when it comes to describing the geisha, no general statements should be made about the group as a whole. And that geisha are actresses selling an image, and therefore how they show themselves while working does not transcend their individuality or necessarily define who they are as a person. As a result, it is safe to say that whenever a claim is made about a group of people, we should question the sources and influences that shaped the claim. And at the same time we should remember that people are individuals, and although they may fit into a group category, they themselves have characteristics that do not fit the mold or stereotypes created about the group..
