Now, a normal-sized city contains fast-food restaurants, supermarkets, shopping malls and hypermarkets, but a small city does not have this charm. The small town may be the most beautiful landscape known to man, but it lacks the necessary luxuries in life that a typical American would benefit from. Carr and Kefalas make this statement which highlights the city's lack of attractiveness: “In fact the most conspicuous aspects of the city landscape may be the very things that are missing; shopping centres, subdivisions, traffic and young people” (26). The authors clearly state that they realize that cities, like the Heartland, are suffering due to their lack of modernization. For all intents and purposes, the city's lack of visual appeal is turning away likely citizens, not just young natives, and possible future employees, from a possible internship with the city. Citizens with a practice or business are hurt by the city's inability to grow and change along with the rest of the world, but the city doesn't realize what the introduction of other businesses could potentially do for their small town. Establishing more commercial businesses, such as shopping malls, hypermarkets and supermarkets, will not only skyrocket business but also bring in revenue and attract profits.
