The central theme in 'Mice and Men' and 'an Inspector Calls' written by John Steinbeck and JB Priestly. Their key theme is in 'Of Mice and Men' and 'An Inspector Calls' is Socialism and Capitalism. Two of the writers John Steinbeck and JB Priestly use female characters to illustrate how people take responsibility for each other and how people portray capitalism. In both novels we see how both writers try to make readers think and explore socialism and capitalism throughout the novel. First, John Steinbeck, the writer of "Mice and Men", in the 1930's women in America were treated and seen as prostitutes. Curley's wife is seen and called a "whore" by Candy and the other ranch workers say similar things like "what a tramp" and "he's got the eye" by George and they say this because he always wears a bright cotton suit and clogs with ostrich feathers; stating that he wants attention; this portrays loneliness. John Steinbeck does not say the name of the writer Curley's wife and yet John Steinbeck has so much sympathy for her; the reason why John Steinbeck doesn't give Curley's wife a name is that John Steinbeck wants to create tension and change the atmosphere among the reader so that the writer can question and think about Curley's wife if she is someone who wants to be with Curley and on the ranch or if he wants to be with someone else or somewhere else. Next the reader begins to wonder if Curley allows herself to talk to anyone on the ranch or if she is alone; Loneliness is also represented in JB Priestly's 'An Inspector Calls' when Mrs Sybil Birling says (to Sheila) 'when you are married, you will realize that men with important work to do sometimes have to spend all their time and their energies for them...... middle of the paper...... At the end of the novel Mrs Sybil Birling must come to the truth that she has rejected Eva Smith who needed urgent help and her daughter wants to marry a good he man and Mrs Sybil Birling does not accept any kind of responsibility for the death of Eva's blacksmith Throughout the entire work of JB Priestley, it is clear that Shelia is one of the main characters due to the impact and role she plays. JB Priestly initially portrays her as a beautiful young woman with a rather selfish and overconfident attitude. With her personality Sheila is able to get everything she wants through her father. When Inspector Goole explains what happened and how Eva Smith died, Sheila shows sympathy and we so how her characteristics change this shows that she is materialistic, this shocked the audience who read the novel. Over the course of the novel we see Sheila transform into different types of characters.
