Both the mouth ritual and latipso were extremely enthralling and surprising for me. The Nacirema participate in daily body rituals, one of which is a mouth ritual... but it is not the daily mouth ritual that includes putting pig hair and other assortments into the mouth, along with particular hand movements, that amazes me but the private mouth ritual. The Private Mouth Rite involves a practitioner making any hole in the mouth larger and/or pulling out teeth, then filling the holes made with some type of magical material. This is done to stop decay and to help friendships and is done twice a year! Latipso ceremonies are ceremonies performed in sorcerers' temples to help the sick involving torture-type treatments. Upon entering the temple, the men of Nacirema must remove all clothing and are taken to perform its natural functions in a vessel, which I can only assume is some kind of masturbation to produce ejaculation. While the women of Nacirema are also forced to take off all their clothes, but then watch intently as they are poked and prodded by the witch doctors.
