On the topic of the Battle of the Sexes I agree with the statement: "Ironically, man still wins the battle of the sexes in literature." In the way the statement taps into the hypocrisies of our ongoing society and social interactions, it connects strongly to the evidence of both The Taming of the Shrew and Ten Things I Hate About You. The themes of male dominance throughout the ages prove to the point that men win the battle of the sexes based on what is expected of them and this is proven not only in literature but also in society at large. The way women accept their role in society and the way they are viewed makes it harder for them to break out of their accepted position, as shown in The Taming of the Shrew and Ten Things I Hate About You. There is however the theme of change on the horizon as women rebel against their subjective roles of domestic drudgery. In the taming of the shrew the battle consists of Petruchio taming Katerina known for her scolding tongue. Shakespeare uses techniques such as imagery in describing many of his characters using animal terms such as "pig" when talking about Sly and "shrew" when talking about Katherina. It gives the effect of showing the changes that happen in the show, such as the taming of Katherina. Petruchio's method of taming Katherina is unorthodox, as he promotes killing with kindness, said in “She has eaten no meat to-day, nor will any one eat any; / Last night he did not sleep, nor will he sleep tonight. /...This is a way to kill a wife with kindness, / And so I will curb her foolish and stubborn humor." (Act IV; scene 1; lines 168-169 and 179-180). The way she "tames " Katherina leaves her no choice but to obey, otherwise she will be deprived of clothes, food, sleep and even sight... middle of paper... domination prevails as well as domination point that women also want to be tamed to some extent. the statement 'Ironically, in literature the battle of the sexes is still won by the man'CONCLUSIONThe theme of the battle of the sexes showed me how valid it is in our society and how it goes unnoticed through acceptance The many different battles of the sexes, whether in literature, in work, in political and even religious media, are all present in our society today. Although the changing times have not done much to change the outcome, I believe society stands finally getting back what was long overdue in the battle of the sexes, where women will no longer go unnoticed. Furthermore, the topic taught me that the battle of the sexes still continues not only in literature but also in society. Works Cited The Taming of the Shrew by William Shakespeare
