It begins by explaining how the rivalry between Filippo and Lorenzo had been going on for years, and Filippo had quickly become the greatest designer of the dome. Unfortunately for Filippo, Lorenzo has the same salary and could possibly share the credit with Filippo. In 1423, when Philip's project was chosen, a disaster seemed to happen; Philip goes to bed, apparently very ill. When it seems that he cannot recover, Lorenzo is forced to take over this project. After Lorenzo puts the men back to work, Filippo miraculously recovers. He returns to the workplace, exposes Lorenzo's incompetence and is rewarded with a salary that is almost triple the original amount. This shows how selfish and self-centered Philip truly is, as well as how easily he can convince others to follow his plans. Not only is he talented at deception, but he seems to enjoy the fear he inflicts on others. Ironically, Filippo is also very concerned about the safety of the workers. He builds a parapet, or balcony, to calm the masons in the air, and implements other safety measures, such as leather harnesses and diluted wine. These safety precautions worked, as only three men died during the dome's construction. It is natural that Filippo finds himself having to deal with unemployment, which leads to trade union disputes and strikes. Philip does not tolerate this behavior and, while rehiring the striking men, pays them a lower wage. Unlike today's strikes, there was no union to support the workers previously
