I am currently working in a group home with three chronically mentally ill men, two of whom have been institutionalized for over ten years and I am working on acquiring adequate social skills by dropping out behaviors that they learned in previous settings. Basic skills like closing the bathroom door or not eating meals at a world-record pace offer many challenges. Behavior modification programming is always adapted and adjusted as things change for them. Establishing positive reward systems that can lead to appropriate behaviors is a challenge in itself. Equally challenging is training less experienced staff on how to use these programs while focusing on short- and long-term goals for these men. Counseling in this context is more on the level of counseling and crisis intervention than a typical patient relationship where I hope to become entangled in the
