Every day the issue of gays and lesbians becomes more and more known and makes giant strides every year. Together with them we learn about bisexuals, pansexuals, asexuals and any other sexuality that is not defended as heterosexual. However, a certain cause is closely related to this, but doesn't make as much progress and isn't heard as much, the issue of transgender people. Although the famous LGBTA activist group involves transgender people, their voice in the movement is quite small and is not heard very often. However, the organization GATE - Global Action for Trans* Equality aims to change this situation and make transgender people known and heard in the hope of uniting the numerous groups that want the same. They hope to one day make the world safe for those who are transgender. This article will cover what being transgender really is, the history of this group and the groups that oppose it, and where this group seems to be headed. Children are taught that there are two sexes: male and female; we later learn that these genders are embedded in our genitals, also known as our sex. However, very few children are taught "the boy who was born in the wrong body" or "the girl who feels like a boy." These cases involve individuals called transgender. Transgender can be defined as an individual whose mental gender does not match the sex assigned to him or her at birth. It can also be explained as someone who “does not unambiguously conform to conventional notions of male or female gender.” (Oxford Dictionary) People facing this problem may suffer from body dimorphic disorder or BDD. Where the individual cares about how the world perceives them as they do not fit the media position of boy or girl. This disorder... middle of paper... prevents the killing and abuse suffered by trans people, and actually encourages such things with signs that say "pray for dead soldiers" and "thank God for dead soldiers" . referring to the new policy allowing LGTBA individuals to join the military. Organizations like GATE, LGTBA, and The Center are necessary because of organizations like GodHateFags. Organizations like GATE are helping to improve the lives of all trans individuals by making the world a safer and more welcoming place for them. As the years go by, they hope that identifying as transgender or non-specific will become more normal and result in less hate and abuse. That one day they will be able to live in a world that accepts them, free from the fear that comes with identifying as such. Because of groups like this, groups like GodHatesFags will have less of a voice in the community. Let's hope that one day such groups will cease to exist.
