Topic > Essay on Manipulation in the Crucible - 1290

Now the definition of weak is one who is easily manipulated. We can see that the entire town of Salem is manipulated into believing that witches are real, but upon a closer look we can see that the girls are easily persuaded by Abigail. For example Mary Warren is a character who can be easily manipulated throughout the entire play. She is initially seen joining the girls after believing she might confess, but is then persuaded by Abigail otherwise (Miller, 20) This is the first example of Mary Warren being bullied by Abigail, Mary is simply not enough strong to oppose Abigail. Mary is therefore simply committed to Abigail's efforts and Mary does not know that it is only the beginning. Soon after, Mary Warren can be observed going against the girls and testifying against them because of how she is manipulated by John Proctor (Miller, 80). Mary is under Abigail's control for most of the entire first act, after which she is persuaded to return to the morally right side of the trial only by a stronger individual. While this persuasion was positive, it was still manipulation. This shows that Mary is the weakest link in the eyes of both a baseless Abigail and a kind-hearted Proctor. Then we finally see Mary Warren eventually join the girls after they drift apart, but only rejoin after Abigail starts claiming that Mary Warren herself is a witch.
