Already dealing with feelings of shame and loss of hope in Jesus Christ, the heavy weight of guilt rests on his shoulders too, so heavily that it brings him to tears. Hughes says "...I was actually crying because I couldn't bear to tell her [aunt] that I had lied, that I had deceived everyone in the church, that I hadn't seen Jesus, and that now I didn't believe there was no Jesus anymore." (232).He lies to the aunt he loved and to the entire church congregation, and knows deep down inside him that he was actively raised in the church, and with his deception taking place within a church, a place where even the non-religious people are wary of telling lies, Hughes grew up with the knowledge that lying is sinful, and believes in what he had done he was wrong, despite having done it so that everyone could leave class and bullies in fifth grade, Hughes lies to someone he loves dearly. His lie changes his life that Jesus doesn't exist, this amazing Lord and Savior he was raised to fervently believe in
