Group 1 Study Guide on the Life of Shakespeare Presented by: Bryce Diaz, Cameron Sistare, Michelle Gerardo, Stella Filipov, Richa Sharma, and Zach AbuegA. Basic background on ShakespeareShakespeare's real birthday is unknown, but his birthday is said to have been 23 April 1564, at his father's house in Henley Street in Stratford. He was born to apprentice glover John Shakespeare and land heiress Mary Arden. He was apprenticed to a butcher. He was a Protestant under the rule of Queen Elizabeth I. It is not certain exactly where Shakespeare was educated, but some suggest that he studied at Stratford Grammar School until the age of 14. After leaving grammar school he is considered the first “Lost Years” until he married. Shakespeare married Anne Hathaway. He was 18 and Hathaway was 26 at the time. Hathaway became pregnant before their wedding; their first child was born 6 months after the wedding. Shakespeare's first child is Susanna, followed by twins, named Hamnet and Judith. Hamnet died at the age of 11 from the bubonic plague. Shortly after the birth of his twins are considered the "lost years", as not much is known about Shakespeare's life during that time. Many speculate that during those years Shakespeare spent time improving his writing and dramatic skills, and moved to London. Some say he was a poacher, or was an assistant to the schoolmaster. The beginning of his career seems to be unclear. Shakespeare's death (at age 52) was ambiguous. It is said that he died of typhus, then known as “new fever” (epidemic of 1616).B.
