Fights and Voli was performed by the cast of STEPS Youth Dance Company. Choreographers for this piece were the works of Isabella Stone, Matt Cornell, Tyrone Robinson, Jessica Lewis with Kung Fu specialist Daniel King, Shona Erskine and artistic director Alice Lee Holland. The overall concept for Fights and Voli was first pitched in late 2012 and began developing in early 2013. The cast began creating Fights and Voli in the studio in January 2014 exploring themes and ideas for the performance final. It took 28 days to create the entire piece. Fights and Voli celebrates 25 years of STEPS Youth Dance Company by inspiring, engaging and empowering young dancers to achieve their life goals in dance. The intention of this performance was to celebrate life in its best and worst moments. Fights and Flight highlights the darkest moments of our lives such as the battles and challenges we face and the physical and mental obstacles young people are subjected to and overcome. It also explores the brightest moments in our lives that are most satisfying and that led us to achieve success. I believe the performance successfully represented the concept of battle within us. They achieved this through fighting and moments of free flight throughout the entire show. I found that the beginning emphasized the "battle" theme by using martial arts movements and chaotic fight scenes between dancers. Fights and Flights was compiled with the cast's personal stories that they shared to create a piece that showcased the experiences of their different ages and life stories. Older and more experienced professional dancers shared their personal stories as they overcame many challenges... middle of paper... I fly as we escape and have fun. The lighting in Part 1 was dark because the theme was Fighting, which suited the Kung Fu choreography and chaotic battle scenes. In Part 2, the lighting was brighter as the theme was Flight, especially in Power and Promise, this scene was colorful and had a more rhythmic tone as it was about being free. The costumes worn by the dancers were black with white straps across the chest and long black garments for professional dancers. The choreographer used white straps to symbolize seat belts that maintain the shape of the body to create strength. Overall, I believe that the STEPS Youth Dance company successfully created a fun piece that highlighted the fight and flight moments in our lives using many different techniques such as props, colored and dark lighting, symbolic costumes, choreography and fun music.
