Wind Energy, the Energy of the FutureIntroductionThe author will discuss the renewable energy properties of wind energy and whether it is practical for sustainable development. The writer will compare the positive and negative attributes of wind energy and whether it has economic benefits. Wind energy could be the future solution to the world's growing energy problems. Wind energy is a very efficient source for generating electricity. In fact, it can produce much more energy than other renewable energy sources. Wind turbines are not complex in construction or operation. The system consists of a generator that, when rotated, generates electricity much like a car's alternator. To turn the generator, the blades are attached to the generator's drive shaft. The blades resemble an airplane propeller. When the wind passes over the blades, it causes them to spin, causing the generator to spin. The faster the generator spins, the more electricity it produces. If there is constant wind, a turbine can continue to generate electricity indefinitely. This is why wind energy is much more efficient than solar energy. Solar energy can only generate electricity when there is significant light. In an article by Jeffrey Winters (2003) “a single industrial-scale turbine, built according to European designs, can provide enough electricity to power more than a thousand homes when the wind blows” (Jeffrey Winters, 2003). It is evident that wind energy generates a significant amount of energy to be a viable energy solution for the world. In a large-scale wind farm, electricity is usually sent directly into utility companies' existing power grid, where they sell the energy to participating cities. In the small-scale commercial and residential sectors...... middle of paper...... wind energy is not only a viable solution for sustainable development but is the future of energy.
