In terms of socializing with Americans through English, two things should be considered. First, how comfortable you are and how well you can speak English with others. Second: How brave and confident are you in speaking English? Most international students, myself included, have been learning English since they were relatively young, but due to the environment we are more familiar and skilled with writing in English than speaking directly to others through this language. With hard work and practice, international students can write consecutive paragraphs or even polished essays, but speaking in perfect English is much more difficult. First, conversation requires international students to generate instant responses to others through a second language. Numerous practices and English thinking are therefore necessary. What I mean by English thinking is that international students should no longer mentally translate other people's statements from English into their native language, but rather should practice simultaneously thinking and speaking through English at the same time. Furthermore, we should never be ashamed of our English speaking skills. We should always be aware that English is our second language and we can never expect to speak English as fluently as we speak in our native language.
