In his speech entitled “because we can, we must” (Almanac of the University of Pennsylvania, 2004), Bono provided his own anecdotes and appeals, inviting graduates to solve the underlying puzzles. First of all, Bono humbly accepts his law degree and talks about the educational experiences he has gained. Bono didn't attend college; however, its acceptance enlightens graduates that true education lies in correcting mistakes in life rather than simply in books. Meanwhile, he praised the American spirit of “no problem we can't solve,” commenting that we could solve all problems with effort. It thus encourages graduates to “betray their age”, that is, to cause revolutions and to explore and tackle problems using creativity. Finally, Bono reassures graduates that by arming themselves with a degree they will be able to fight the problems. To close his speech, Bono makes an appeal for their generation to take responsibility for building a new world.
