What is marriage? According to Cornell University Law School, the definition of marriage is “The lawful union of a couple as spouses. The basic elements of a marriage are: (1) the legal capacity of the parties to marry, (2) the mutual consent of the parties, and (3) a marriage contract as required by law. This definition states that marriage is essentially a contract between two people. Nowhere in this definition does it state that marriage must be between a man and a woman. However, the Merriam-Webster dictionary definition of marriage is “(1): the state of being united to a person of the opposite sex as husband or wife in a consensual and contractual relationship recognized by law (2): the state of being united to a person of the same sex in a relationship similar to that of traditional marriage". This definition allows for the interpretation of marriage as marriage, whether it is an opposite or same-sex marriage. What is a gay marriage?
