The debate about school uniforms has been going on for years and is still widely debated and discussed in our education system today. Both sides of the issue have many supporters. As you will see, taking all things into consideration, the positive effects of school uniforms are much greater than the negative effects. I believe uniforms should be required in public schools because their use would lead to better education, less violence, and lower costs for parents. Former President Clinton is perhaps the most famous and influential advocate for school uniforms. In a March 1996 speech he said: "If it means that classrooms will be tidier and more disciplined, and that our young people will learn to value themselves by what they are on the inside rather than by what they wear on the outside, then our public schools should be able to require their students to wear uniforms (Mitchell 1). “I can't agree more with former President Clinton. It's about education. I think school uniforms can be a great asset. Politics helps schools to provide a better education, meaning there are fewer distractions for students and less stress. One of the main distractions that schools without a uniform policy face is students focusing on other students' wardrobes rather than concentrating. about school. Bullying and peer pressure also become bigger distractions in schools without uniforms because students tend to focus more on those wearing the latest brands and styles. The uniform policy promotes less stress for students in deciding what to wear each morning and also helps students take less time getting ready for school in the morning. It has also been shown that schools have… stationery shops or uniform suppliers(Polacheck 1)” As you can see, school uniforms are more convenient for parents. Even for low-income parents who believe they can't afford school uniforms, there are many ways to make them affordable. There are clothing vouchers that can be used to purchase school uniforms, as well as many local businesses that donate to schools to help with uniform costs. Another option is that thrift stores also sell uniforms at a low price. Overall, school uniforms are a great thing to have. Although the discussion on whether or not school uniforms will harm schools will be endless. There appears to be more positive than negative perspectives on schools requiring school uniforms. I myself know that when I have a child of my own I will have no problem if my child attends a school that requires school uniforms.
