Young boys grow into men, as friends and family influence them heavily. The book Holes is written by Louis Sachar and is the story of a young man who has gotten into trouble, learning about bullying and being self-sufficient. The main character, Stanley Yelnats, finds himself in a juvenile detention center due to the family "curse". Camp Green Lake is the center Stanley frequented. The land on which Camp Green Lake currently resides sits on a dried-up lake. It was once a huge lake, in the middle of a thriving city, which is now a deserted wasteland. It hadn't rained in that area for years, which is why camp officials believed it would be a perfect place to teach troubled children a lesson. Over the course of the novel, Stanley learns that the people around him are the greatest influence. Stanley realizes his transformation from being a young boy to entering adulthood. The novel Holes shows that negative treatment from friends and family has a positive impact on the journey to adulthood. The way friends and family treat and act towards a person could become hereditary traits. As you grow you have to become tougher and stronger so that you can present yourself as a confident figure like Mr. Sir did in the novel Holes. A camp counselor said, “My name is Mr. Sir,” “Every time you talk to me you must call me by my name, is that clear?” Stanley hesitated. “Uh, yes, sir,” he said, though he couldn't imagine that that was actually the man's real name. 'You're not in the Girl Scouts anymore,' Mr. Sir said” (Sachar 13). Mr. Sir intimidated Stanley because he presented himself as the dominant force. Continuing towards manhood is an attribute you will encounter on your journey of… middle of paper… ticism and you will turn it around to work in your favor. It is essential to be able to choose the type of people who will surround you. Finally have the ability to be completely self-sufficient and be able to provide for yourself. You have to have the strength to defend yourself and defend yourself and not be made fun of. There are some things that should be taken from this, which is not an easy task when you become a man. It's something you earn, something that can't just happen. It's the combination of a lifetime of experiences accumulating and finally understanding what it means to become a man. The journey to adulthood is a huge road that should not be taken lightly. You will encounter many twists and turns on the road; there are many challenges to face. The challenges can be overcome and it will not be an easy task. On the other hand, whoever said something was easy.
