A rapidly growing population develops an even faster growing population of people who go hungry every day. Farmers continue to improve their techniques due to constant technological change to keep up with population growth. How do we solve this problem? Many think it's as simple as growing more food; but simply growing more food isn't that easy. Growing the abundant amount of food that will be needed to feed 9 billion people in 2050 will take time, patience, education and everyone's collaboration. The average American is now 3 generations removed from the family farm. What do we farmers do about it? We must educate the unknown for good in agriculture to abolish farmer stereotypes. “For the first time in history, four generations of consumers are working and communicating side by side” (“Communicating Across Multiple Generations” 2013, p. 1). Generation Y, the most connected generation, are individuals born between 1980 and 2000 (“Communicating Across Multiple Generations” 2013, p.2). If we think back to when technology really took off in the early 2000s, technology has now taken its toll on society. Almost every teenager and adult has a cell phone in their hand with which they can access the Internet, email and social media sites. Young children are capable of teaching their parents about technology. Technology has changed dramatically over the last 20 years. This technological advancement has led our society to develop a fifth generation, Generation Z. Sustainability is about achieving harmony and balance between economic, social and ecological aspects: personal, interpersonal and spiritual. A life of harmony and balance is a life of quality. Sustainability offers people the opportunity to achieve a more desirable quality of life. Sustainability is ultimately about people. Sustainable agriculture and adapting the latest technologies are the answer to feeding the world in 2050.
