Fences presents many aspects of life that we experience day by day. Respect seems to be one of the key aspects of Fences. Troy wants respect from his family because he is the man of the house while acting callous and indifferent towards his wife Rose, his brother Gabriel and his son Cory. Troy had an abusive father, he never liked him. Troy ran away from home to be on his own at an early age because he never received the love and respect he wants from his family, so he returned to repeat what his father had done due to the inability to see that time it had changed around him. Independence is linked to the masculinity that Troy possesses. In the 1950s a man working for an entire family was normal and the woman stayed at home to take care of the children. The dominance of the male figure was a big problem compared to the segregation of the time, but it was slowly changing. So, Troy can't see the way to the future. Troy still lives in the past because that's all he knows about raising a family. Rose handles everything that happens around Troy by herself because she respects him as her husband. Respect is part of the love required to raise a child; Troy has neglected this aspect of love, so he repeats the cycle of his bad past. The first repeating cycle of the past can be seen in the play when Troy rejects Cory's opportunity. Troy doesn't want his son Cory's life to be like his, but nevertheless he raised him to be an independent man like his own. Troy denies Cory the chance to try out for football because he believes his son will experience his disappointment in the industry. Troy told Rose, "I don't want her to be like me!" (1046). One of the differences that complicates their relationship is that they grew up in completely different times... middle of paper... talking to Rose, his wife who believes family should respect no matter how big a mistake they make, e.g. example when Troy cheats on Rose. She was angry but doesn't want to leave him because she has a child to take care of. The amount of respect he has for his family is enormous. Overall, Rose is preventing the future from returning to her family, so she told her son to go to his father's funeral. Troy has seen many negative influences that have led him to believe that the world is not changing. From disappointment in the sports industry to a destroyed family. I believe Troy is a good man and doesn't mean to hurt his family in any way. Rose understands this and will stay together until the day she dies to continue nurturing the foundation for the Maxson family's new future. If respect is ignored, the bad past may come back and catch you off guard.
