Her family was not very wealthy and her father did not believe in education beyond high school for girls. Then James went to work for three years at a tax office. She then married Ernest Connor Bantry White in 1941. James and Ernest had two children, Claire and Jane. James was in his forties when his first novel, Cover Her Face, was published in 1962. He used his personal and professional life to write his extraordinary stories. “These helped her both in describing police detective work and in portraying characters” (Encyclopedia). James used his work for the basis of his novel. He provided his readers with information about police and medical procedures. In A Mind to Murder (1962), Shroud for a Nightingale (1971) and Death of an Expert Witness (1977). It focuses on examining a relationship between people who still tell a mystery.
