Loneliness enveloped him as Ahmad's eyes flickered with sleep. The sleep had been anything but restful. He had prayed it was a horrible dream, but peering into the silence of the apartment meant it was real. Ahmad's mother would wake him up as she prepared the family for Sunday service. Ahmad rose from the fetal position and leaned back straight against the lightly padded couch, which dropped his knitted blanket to his waist. Ahmad still wears his clothes from yesterday. His body ached from the tension. The morning sun tormented Ahmad with its brightness that filtered through the kitchen shutters. Once he got up, Ahmad walked to the window. There he saw the city begin to move. Then, Ahmad heard the plaintive call of prayer coming from the neighborhood mosque as a flock of pigeons flew overhead. Damn dirty birds, Ahmad thought to himself. Ahmad began stacking Vania's books on the kitchen table as his mind raced with unanswered questions. Who was this mysterious Caller? Who would take his mother and sister? No one, but Rami kept coming back to his thoughts. He walked back to the couch and sat down.....
