Knowing that 27 million people would attend the fair during the six-month period, many of whom would be looking for a place to stay, Holmes was eager to welcome single, naïve women who he could enchant them until they became victims in his deceptive hotel (Ramsland). In fact, so many people were looking for housing that Holmes could “pick and choose” who to allow to stay and who to reject (HH Homes Bio…). Holmes favored two specific methods of killing, both equally terrifying. The first was to gas his unsuspecting victims while they slept in their rooms using a network of pipes throughout the hotel, controlled from a control panel found in his closet. The gas would remove oxygen from the room and cause the victim to suffocate (HH Homes Bio…). The second was more personal, Holmes would put a rag with chloroform on the victim's face to make him unconscious and then take the body to the basement to torture and kill him (HH Homes Bio…). He would then sell the skeleton and organs to medical schools, incinerate the body in his incinerator, or let the body rot in one of his two lime pits.
