The first role of the school resource center is that of a center for curricular activities. The school resource center can be said to exist through and for the school curriculum. Tilke states that the curriculum is often referred to as a set of subjects that appear in the school timetable, but another way of looking at the curriculum is to consider the set of experiences that school offers (as cited in Bartlett, Burton and Peim, 2002, page 56). The school curriculum can be divided into three broad areas: formal stated curriculum, emotional, behavioral and social curriculum along with the broader or hidden curriculum (Tilke, 2002). Stated formal curriculum: Its content may be easily identifiable, especially if there is a codified state or legislative curriculum that governs all schools in a given area. It may be that official documents form the basis of a librarians' survey of the school's curriculum, followed by general school documents, supplemented by details that can be found in departmental records and handbooks. The emotional, behavioral and social curriculum can also be found in the official information. Again, particular options or applications for the individual school will mean that the librarian will need to consult school documentation for additional and specific information and speak to colleagues at the school. It will also help provide resources to enable students to develop an understanding of acceptable limits. Broader or hidden curricula will exist at school, but information about them may not be available, at least in detail.
