• A definition of sustainability. “Able to maintain itself at a certain level or pace without being completely exhausted”, this is the definition of sustainability according to the Oxford Dictionary. In simpler words and more related to this topic, it means finding and using an energy source that will power our society efficiently without running out.• A simple explanation of the relationship between sustainability and renewable energy. Why is renewable energy desirable? Since this current unit deals with the sustainability of energy, this would mean that the energies that would be sustainable are renewable energies. Currently, most of our energy sources come from non-renewable sources, 87% to be exact, such as oil, natural gas and coal. All these energy sources primarily power our societies, but in the long term these sources will begin to decline, crippling nations, as they are one of the foundations needed to run our societies. That's why governments are looking for alternative ways to keep the population going, so when current sources run out there will be no more doubts. Renewable sources, such as hydroelectric, solar and wind, are also sustainable because they do not waste the material that powers them and the energy source cannot be exhausted. Since the energy source cannot be completely exhausted, there is infinite generation of energy, thus making it desirable. • Using your knowledge of science denial tactics, create a clear and convincing argument for why we don't produce all of our energy sustainably. Your argument must be clear, where the conclusion is clearly supported by evidence. Use the tests from the websites above or supplement them with your own. There are multiple reasons… middle of paper… consumers as no electricity or energy would reach them, forcing them to return to fossil fuels. The final reason why non-renewable sources power our societies is because of our transportation. Most transportation used around the world requires fossil fuels, while only a few vehicles run on electricity produced from renewable energy. These vehicles themselves are expensive, which is why few people use them. There are renewable sources such as biomass that can run these vehicles, but again they are very expensive and unreliable. In conclusion, the reason why our societies are not run from renewable sources is mainly due to the fact that the costs are significantly high for investors and consumers. As a result, the energy itself is unreliable and inefficient, making renewable energy a huge gamble.
