The voucher system offers funding to allow parents to choose a school for their children. Whether private, public or in some cases home schooling, parents would be partially reimbursed or tuition would be paid in full. According to an article in the Journal of Education Finance, Richard King and Lenford Sutton wrote, “Proponents argue that open competition would put healthy pressure on both public and private schools” (244). While opponents argue that this effort exists to benefit a small sector of the United States, its supporters have already studied its success in some areas of the country and argue that it may be the best strategy to fix public schools the quickest. Growing evidence indicates that the voucher system could be the answer to boosting the public school system and thus improving outcomes for all children. Upon initial examination of voucher policies, apprehension began to develop regarding the Establishment Clause of the First Amendment, which is a law prohibiting the voucher system. government from proclaiming or adopting a national religion (web). Regarding this statute, many believe that using taxpayer money for vouchers would blur the lines between church and state, while also encouraging the resegregation of public schools (244).
