Topic > Analysis of the Pedagogy of the Oppressed - 1276

Paulo Freire is perhaps the most influential thinker on education and is best known for his work entitled "The Pedagogy of the Oppressed". It has provided us with a new progressive way of teaching. He was deeply concerned about the oppressed. It proposes a pedagogy with a new relationship between teacher, student and society. Freire made a number of important theoretical innovations that had a considerable impact on the development of educational practice. Freire put a lot of emphasis on “dialogue” in informal education. “If the structure does not allow dialogue, the structure must be changed”. It gave rise to the theory of banking concept of education; highlighted the contrasts between educational forms that treat people as objects rather than subjects; and explored education as a means of cultural action. The book is divided into 4 chapters and deal accordingly as follows; the revolutionary context, the learning method preferred by the oppressors (in this case referring to the South American context of the time in which the book was written), which is better known as the banking education system and consequently the alternative counter-theory of the problem - posing the education suggested by Freire. The 3rd chapter then continues by providing practical examples of the South American educational system on which he worked compared to the theories he supported and the last chapter describes the two opposing theories of cultural action; the 'dialogical' and the 'antidialogical'. It can be said that the education system as we know it today and with reference to the local context, the former seriously lacks dialogue. The curriculum relies heavily on students learning like parrots, to memorize “rotely,” and that the t… in the center of the paper… is with each other; students from teachers, teachers from students and students from students. They embrace the thought that the teacher is not the absolute authoritarian. Rather, everyone in the labs works together. Here the dialogue is more direct and meaningful and applied to each student's learning style. The sole purpose behind this idea is for both students and teachers to share work and experiences in a safe and comfortable environment. The “Community of Students” seeks to eradicate oppression. These consist of caring and loving environments and promote a sense of belonging among students while providing genuine encouragement. These types of models, such as problem posing and the “community of learners,” inspire new ways of thinking if adopted correctly. It is important to keep in mind that everyone in society has something significant to contribute.
