The relationship between psychiatrists and pharmacy has come under scrutiny in recent years due to the sale of ADHD drugs. The primary focus of psychiatrists and medical schools when researching and treating patients with attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) should be patient care. However, when interactions exist between physicians and pharmaceuticals, there is a conflict of interest that must be recognized and managed to avoid any harm to patient care. The increase in diagnoses of ADHD and its treatment with psychotropic drugs demonstrates that conflicts of interest exist between doctors' commitment to patient care and the desire of pharmaceutical companies to sell their products. The purpose of this article is to examine conflicts of interest among pharmaceutical companies, psychiatrists, and medical researchers in the diagnosis, advertising, and prescribing of ADHD and other psychotropic medications. ADHD became a popular ADHD diagnosis in the 1980s, when pharmaceutical companies began advertising the ADHD diagnosis. syndrome and promote medicine to doctors, educators and parents. The American Psychiatric Association's Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders currently characterizes people with ADHD as "a persistent pattern of inattention and/or hyperactivity-impulsivity that is more frequent and severe than typically observed" (DSM-IV 2013). Symptoms include excessive talking, fidgeting or squirming, often losing objects, difficulty sitting still, playing silently, or maintaining attention.
