The Internet, the world's largest network, connects families, consumers, businesses and governments in more than 100 countries around the world. It is growing at a rapid pace, and as a result, e-commerce is growing just as fast, because many e-commerce operations are conducted on the world wide web. E-commerce conducts business electronically without producing paper. It includes purchasing and purchasing goods and services electronically, such as via the Internet. Thanks to the breadth of possibilities a retailer has to reach new customers and suppliers around the world and the time savings that come with emails, e-commerce is growing at a very fast rate. The article “E-Commerce Thrives in Canada” indicates that conducting business via electronic means is growing significantly in Canada. According to this article, JC Williams Group conducted a survey of 1,312 Canadians who had purchased goods online in the six months preceding the survey. Of all Canadians surveyed, 32% had made five or more online purchases and 68% of Canadians had made one to four purchases. This indicates that buying goods online is popular among Canadians and selling goods online is very profitable for Canadian businesses. Statistics Canada reported that in 2005, e-commerce sales totaled C$39.2 billion (up C$32.7 billion from 2001). The figures include both private and public sector sales on the Internet. Statistics Canada also reports that two years later, in 2007, private and public sector e-commerce sales had already reached an estimated $62.7 billion. This indicates that e-commerce is growing at a very rapid pace. Having seen the effect of e-commerce on revenue, many retailers have created their own websites.
