I. IntroductionIn many parts of the world, poverty has been a continuing issue of concern. The burden of concern affects both developed and developing countries. In a broad sense, poverty can be defined as the scarcity or deprivation of basic human needs, such as food, shelter and clothing. There are various reasons why the world is experiencing such a state. By knowing the reasons, we can analyze and determine what needs to be done to address the problem and help alleviate the problems faced by these countries.II. Poverty and its relevance It is a problem because of its disruptive effects on society and the economy. If people do not have access to clean water, adequate food and permanent housing, this could lead to poor sanitation, a polluted environment and increased crime and violence. Poverty has many effects on people, such as unemployment, inadequate housing and living conditions. environmental conditions, alcohol and substance abuse, lack or absence of education and water- and food-related diseases (www.poverties.org, 2013). It can be a continuous cycle. Due to lack of education, there would be unemployment, poor housing conditions, diseases and substance abuse, etc. It could also be the opposite, attributing the wounds that society has received from poverty to other effects. Another effect of poverty is crime. Among poor areas, crime is one of the obvious effects of poverty due to high unemployment rates. Low incomes tend to lead to property crimes, such as burglaries and illegal trafficking. In a broader sense, discrimination and social prejudice generate violent crimes. The lack of social cohesion and harmony can lead to riots and social unrest (www.poverties.org, 2013).
