The word “spiritual” is universal and is known in many different contexts. The word “spiritual” began around the year 1300. It originates from the medieval Latin ecclesiastical use of the Latin “spiritualis” meaning “of or pertaining to the breath, breath, wind, or air, pertaining to the spirit. (Harper, Online Etymology, 2014.) Merriam-Webster defines the literal meaning of the word as “of or relating to religion or religious beliefs.” While these origins relate to the traditional religious definition of “spiritual,” non-traditional religions, philosophy, meditation, and even atheism all make use of the word. Although the words “religion” and “spiritual” may seem like probabilities to some people, many find their spirituality in religion. When religion is found, a person strives to do better and be a better person. The person strives to please his almighty and even if he still has some problems along the way, he continues with the help of his faith in his religion. Often those who are involved in a religion lead happier and more productive lives. There is more social contact and, most likely, more support. The mental activity that comes from optimism and volunteering learns coping strategies that improve the ability to deal with stress and psychological factors such as “reason for being” lead to a happier life. It may also be that religious people adopt behaviors related to good health, such as less substance abuse. All religions have some form of contact with their spiritual creator. Mainly the common theme is prayer. Although different religions have different ways of doing this, it is a way for the person to stay in touch with their God. This is one... middle of paper... the inhabitants of life are what makes it so unique to each person. In this way, one could say that this is part of one's spirituality and one's ongoing search for the meaning of life. In conclusion, it is natural for a human being to wonder who he belongs to and why he is here. Being spiritual brings us closer to that answer. When you become spiritual you gain peace of mind and a sense of belonging. There are many different ways to be spiritual, and they all allow you to handle burdens with a sense of comfort. So, no matter what life throws at someone, the faith that is chosen will help them cope, whether that faith is traditional, non-traditional, philosophical, meditative, or, essentially, just a personal experience.
