Topic > Patients' Rights - 1624

The practice of medicine in the 1960s saw a shift in the doctor-patient relationship that ultimately cultivated the patients' rights movement. Individuals have sought to become proactive in their healthcare and the healing process of their bodies. As medical practice was evolving rapidly in terms of technology and specialized care, healthcare and patients' rights became a major concern to address. In 1973 the American Hospital Association published a patients' bill of rights that provided the patient with the most beneficial health care available. This bill of rights required all accredited hospitals to accept this standard from now on (Patients' Rights, 2004). The American Medical Association (AMA) has developed a Code of Medical Ethics that includes: The patient has the right to obtain and discuss health information regarding the benefits, risks, and costs of treatment alternatives; the patient can make health care decisions recommended by the doctor; the patient has the right to courtesy, respect, dignity and timely attention to healthcare needs; and the patient has the right to confidentiality, continuity and adequate healthcare. (emedicinehealth, 2011). Open and honest communication between the patient and the doctor will allow both parties to make decisions to properly care for the needs. Patients have the right to know all details regarding the service or treatment that will be provided and the right to refuse such service. or treatment before it happens. This informed consent will communicate the exact details of the procedure, the intensity of pain and/or period of disability experienced, the involvement of risks and any alternative methods of treatment and their risks. A patient will receive a confirmation...... half of the document...... severity of protected health information.Works Citedemedicinehealth. (2011).
