Topic > Essay on Euthanasia - 715

Euthanasia also known as “assisted suicide” involves an injection that slowly kills a person who has been diagnosed with a terminal illness or has been given a time limit on his or her life . Even though euthanasia is a very sad topic, it ultimately has a very positive outlook. Euthanasia is a Greek word meaning “good death”. There are different types of euthanasia such as voluntary euthanasia, involuntary euthanasia, active euthanasia, passive euthanasia, doctor-assisted suicide and assisted suicide. The most common type of euthanasia is passive euthanasia, which includes withholding food, water and surgery, withholding necessary medicine or removing the patient from life support are also included in the passive mode. There is debate about whether euthanasia should be legal and also whether it is humane to kill another human being. Since 2000, twenty cases of euthanasia have occurred each year. About 9% of deaths in the Netherlands are due to euthanasia. The way most people view this procedure is that they will die anyway, so why should we let them die suffering every day until their last breath. The different types are somewhat similar, voluntary euthanasia is when a consistent person does voluntary euthanasia and the continuous request to be helped to die. Involuntary euthanasia involves ending a person's life without their knowledge or consent. Active euthanasia requires ending a person's life through the use of drugs, either by yourself or with the help of another person. Passive euthanasia includes ending a person's life by not taking the necessary and regular actions to stay alive. This type is the most common and is performed primarily by withholding food, water, medications, or surgical procedures. Doctor-assisted suicide is a trivial thing... middle of paper... a medical organization in the United States considers euthanasia unethical, requires doctors to go against the Hippocratic Oath which says: "I swear to practice medicine ethically and honestly." Another argument against euthanasia is that it is the doctor's job to heal, NOT kill. My opinion on euthanasia is that no matter what, if someone wants to die, they will find a way to commit suicide. I believe it is better to move on and let go than to watch the person you love slowly waste away in pain and suffering for months or even years. If someone doesn't want to spend the last bit of their time here on earth extorting pain and embarrassed by how they look or how weak they are, then go ahead and let it end. Everyone has the right to live and the right to die, so why should we be the ones to stop someone from ending their life of pain if they are unhappy?.
