Topic > The Works of Dr. Seuss: Written for Adults or Children?

“Unless someone like you cares a lot, nothing will get better. It's not. (Seuss 1 pg. 58) In our world today, the environment is not cared for properly. Almost anyone can look outside, or look into a stream, and find trash or pollution covering the landscape. Dr. Seuss knew and despised this fact. Because of this, he wrote a children's book called “The Lorax.” His strong respect for the environment is represented through this character as a “guardian” type figure of the imaginary truffula trees. When the Once-ler arrived and found the forest of these trees, he decided to cut down one of them. He realized that by cutting down a tree and selling the silky leaves, he could become rich! So he did just that. He cut another. And then another. But this wasn't enough. So he cut ten. And then he cut a hundred. Until finally there were no more truffula trees to cut down. The Once-ler felt terrible, but it didn't matter because he was rich. Now, in today's society, most people don't care about the environment. So there is not much to discuss about this aspect in relation to this book. But what can be argued about this book is the fact that greed causes more harm than we know or see. The Once-ler realized, long after he had cut down all the trees, that what he was doing was extremely greedy, environmentally harmful, and reckless. Greed is one of the biggest social problems in today's society. The “I want more and I don't care what has to happen for me to get it” mentality is a very extreme, but unfortunately real, way of thinking about people. Mahatma Gandhi said; “There is enough in the world for man's needs but not for his greed.” He wisely said that in today's world, we can only... middle of paper... because of a star on our belly. Theodor Seuss Geisel was a very practical man, who taught very important life lessons not only to children, but also to adults through his children's books. Works Cited "Adolf Hitler".
