The War of the Worlds is a novel written by Herbert George (HG) Wells in the year 1898. It is a story of an alien invasion that takes place in London, England and how humanity as a whole comes together in the toughest situation possible, against the odds and in the face of adversity, and still emerge victorious despite the countless deaths. Destroyed buildings and monuments. And sometimes loss of hope. In this report I will discuss three of the most important terms in the book: conflict, setting, and motif. The conflict, setting, and motif of War of the Worlds are: Man vs. Martian, early 20th century London, and Death (as motif). The first term I will talk about is conflict. Man vs. Martian is the perfect example of conflict in this story. The conflict in this story occurs almost immediately after the Martians land on Earth. When the first Martian lands, a crowd of people gathers around the crater created by the ship's impact. They see the Martian exit the ship and almost immediately incinerate one of the humans peering into the crater. Eventually, more Martians land and eventually the entire human race is under attack. The Martians nearly kill the narrator (who remains nameless) many times in the book. Attempts to attack the Martians by humans seem futile. On a side note, humanity versus itself is also a major conflict in this book. Some of the main characters start to question themselves, religion and sometimes go crazy. These circumstances seem to be a true test of how one holds oneself together in times of great turmoil. The next end of the discussion is sunset. Most of the book is set in small country towns... middle of paper... d for unknown causes, in 1946, at the age of eighty, in his home in London. Some hypotheses about his death involved diabetes or even the possibility of liver cancer. He was cremated upon request and jokingly stated that his epitaph should read “I told you so. Damn fools. Herbert George Wells will forever remain one of the best science fiction authors of all time. And his works will continue to inspire people for as long as they are around.
