As technology advances, new relationships are created between humans and computers. Since the mid-1960s, people have become connected to artificial intelligence, rather than just using it. Programs possess attractive, human-like qualities, having been gendered and sexualized throughout their history. Today's popular, and generally female, artificial intelligence, Siri, is the latest addition in a long line of chatterbots. Her Norwegian name means "beautiful woman who leads to victory". There's already an expectation attached to its name: if you use it, you'll be happy (and it's pretty too). Siri answers questions with a voice that is part human and part robotic, deep, alert, capable and feminine. She was also programmed to have a certain attitude, a slightly sarcastic and witty personality. People describe the program using female pronouns. CNN's Brandon Griggs raises an interesting point, commenting that Siri's gender "has even prompted some users to flood blogs and online forums with sexually suggestive questions for Siri like 'What are you wearing?' (Siri's bewildered response: 'Why do people keep asking me that?').” As today's AI is smarter and increasingly capable of emotionally engaging people, humans have begun to view their relationships with robots in new and surprising ways. “Asking Siri to locate a friend quickly leads to the fantasy of finding a friend in Siri,” says Sherry Turkle, the psychologist who directs MIT's Initiative on Technology and Self. “In those fantasies,” he continues, “Siri is like a best friend, but better in some ways. He will always listen to us and will never disappoint us, he will not get angry or cause conflict. It is a friendship without reciprocity, as… middle of paper… an assistant who could complement the limitations of our mind and free us from mundane and boring tasks.” So, Siri will ultimately be the cute, helpful robot who does the dirty work while humanity sits back and relaxes in its favorite chair. Technology has made great strides since 1966, which has allowed programmers to create sexier, more idyllic AI. The history of women as submissive and inferior is expressed in the idea that artificial intelligence possesses the allure of unfettered control and pleasure. The physical beauty – the sensual allure – of human women is expressed in the image of chatterbots and their disembodied voices. People are attracted to the attractive human qualities of technology because it presents the fantasy of a perfect relationship with a sexy fem-bot who fulfills every need.
