A Sweet Story of Nutella Fuel your day with a delicious spread that's part of a complete breakfast. With many ingredients essential to maintaining a healthy diet, why would two California mothers file a lawsuit against this breakfast (7)? The breakfast they gave their children, although seemingly beneficial, has the nutritional values of a candy bar. However, Nutella continues to contribute to the Ferrero family's net worth of over $26 billion (10). To find out how Nutella was born, we have to go back 13.83 billion years to the Big Bang. It all began with the theory that the explosion of an extremely dense singularity would create the raw material for everything (6). This theory is based on logic, but every day there is evidence to support this theory. After the Big Bang, the universe was expanding rapidly over time as matter and energy began to separate (6). However, at this stage of the game matter was only made up of protons and neutrons. When temperatures dropped low enough, protons were able to bond with electrons to form atoms like hydrogen and helium (4). From dying stars we received other atoms of greater mass, such as carbon and oxygen, from the fusion of atoms at high temperatures. Carbon, oxygen and hydrogen provide the basic molecular structure of hazelnuts, but where would they grow? The Earth formed 4.8 billion years ago (3) . It became the home of hazelnuts because it had an atmosphere and environment that allowed life to thrive in later years. The Earth's surface was once composed of a single continental mass, known as Pangea (1). Over time it has divided into seven different plates free to move following the movements of the underlying hot and semi-liquid magma... ...middle of paper......oil or to feed livestock. Today the shells are also used for mulching and for landscaping (9). It was only during the Second World War, however, that hazelnuts found a place in the baked delight now known as Nutella. Due to the cocoa shortage, Pietro Ferrero used hazelnuts in his baked goods because they were abundant in his hometown in Italy (8). Nutella was initially produced in blocks, but was later transformed into a spreadable paste. Nutella spread to America in 1983 and soon became popular around the world. While some parents may only see the harmful consequences of Nutella, this iconic breakfast spread wouldn't have made it with the slightest historical alteration. Similar to a thousand-piece puzzle, everything must fit together to produce the final product, Nutella. The historical path that led to the creation of Nutella is surprising.
