Topic > Media and Crime Case Study - 703

What do most children around the world do in their social time? Watch television. The Jamie Bulger case raises the question of whether violent films can be blamed after the two boys reportedly watched "Child's play 3" before killing the 3-year-old (Slideshare.net, 2014). Newspaper headlines scream at us, drawing our attention to crime, designed to shock, frighten and titillate. What exactly is the relationship between media and crime? The three main theoretical perspectives that will be discussed include media effect, moral panic theory, and negative affect theory. To what extent do mass media cause antisocial, deviant or criminal behavior? Media effect theory explains how the media influences society and how society influences the media. The media effects model approaches the problem backwards. This means they start with the media and then try to make connections rather than starting with the offender and finding the root of the problem, another criticism is also linked to this where the model focuses on the individual rather than the society. A study conducted by Hagell and Newbury (1994) interviewed 78 violent adolescents and then traced their behavior to media use. They compared their data with that of a group of over 500 "normal" school pupils of the same age. They found that delinquent youths watched less television and video games than their peers and had little access to technology in the first place, thus going against the model. (Theory.org.uk, 2014) Stanley Cohens (1972/2002) publication Folk Devils and Moral Panics: The Creation of the Mods and Rockers is the origin of moral panic. 'A condition, an episode, a person or a group of people emerges to be defined as... halfway through the document... w to try to reform today's politics to help the future, as shown in late 2005 with the anti-Muslim revolt. Australian society has been able to explore ways to reform society today. Moral panic theory also has a structural bias, meaning that it assumes that the public will react in a certain way to the media, this trait can also be found in the negative effects model. The negative effects model states that society will simply accept the data given to them and therefore behave in a certain way. Evidence shows that there is a correlation between media and crime, however it may not be as strong as these three models suggest. Factors such as focusing more on the individual than on society are a weakness shared by all. Moral panic in my opinion is the strongest model that shows how if a dangerous individual is highlighted by the media, society can overreact.
