The world wars The post-war changes and the differences between the first and second world wars are the jazz age, the lost generation, technological advances and the differences in wars. These changes and differences have changed the world today, especially in America and Europe. During the post-war period, women began to gain rights, such as the vote and expanded suffrage. In the midst of World War I, female jobs begin to increase significantly in the means of production. Women created assembly lines for faster production of supplies, weapons, and ammunition for warfare (Effects of World War I). After the war, there were young women known as flappers who would express their freedom during the Jazz Age. “Flappers rejected the old ways in favor of an exciting new freedom” (Ellis, Esler 523). A major writer known as F. Scott Fitzgerald took control of the jazz age (Badertscher). World War I ended due to the signing of the Treaty of Versailles. This treaty forced Germany to take the blame for World War I. The League of Nations was created to resolve disputes between nations and avoid future disputes. The postwar economy led the nation into the Great Depression, leaving Germany unable to pay reparations. Germany's reparations amounted to $30 million. November 11, 1918 is known as Armistice Day, the day Germany surrendered to end World War I (Ellis, Esler, and Thompson 474). In World War I France and Britain gained much new land and resources when Germany suffered most. The outcome in Eastern Europe led to communism and the United States entered World War I due to the sinking of the Lusitania in 1916 (Thompson). The sinking of the Lusitania killed 128 Americans (Ellis, Esler 468).
