Human beings participate in media consumption every day. Technology has changed the means of producing media by making it more readily available. Technological progress, such as television, smartphones and the Internet, has caused a decline in the use of literary communications. People are more likely to watch a video online rather than read the newspaper; Furthermore, people tend to prefer watching movies rather than reading a book. Society, especially in the United States, has been consumed by technological advances. People no longer have to read printed books, thanks to the invention of the Kindle and Nook along with apps on other reading tablets. The use of the Internet has made it possible to order books directly from websites instead of going to the bookstore. All these things affect the consumption of literary communication. Literature impacts people in unique ways compared to other media sources. Every reader perceives a text differently, and every book influences every reader in different ways. If reading literary communications promotes creativity and stimulates the mind to interpret the content of a text and analyze the effect it has on the reader; therefore the declination of reading will influence the perspective of life in a culture. Reading, or the lack thereof, is important in a culture because it affects how citizens perceive life. Over time the amount of people who love to read has decreased. Technology, by providing other means of entertainment, is partially responsible for making reading seem less desirable than the Internet or television.
